Have you ever wondered if your daily drive is impacting the ocean? In this video, we dive deep into the science of how carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from human activities, especially burning fossil fuels in cars, are altering the ocean's chemistry.
We'll explore:
🔬 The basics of how CO2 affects the pH of water
📉 The significance of the Keeling Curve and its data on atmospheric CO2 levels
🌐 The broader impacts of ocean acidification on marine life and ecosystems
Join us as we break down the science behind ocean acidification and understand the real-world implications of our carbon footprint. By the end of this video, you'll see how even small actions can contribute to significant changes in our oceans.

The latest data from the EPA (2022) shows that the average mpg of gas cars in the US is 26.0 mpg. The way you worded it, it was implied that a gallon of gas is burned up in 5 miles. Either you mistakenly worded it that way, or you're being dishonest. Which is it?

I think you need your science credentials checked. With the amount of water in the ocean the ratio of dissolved CO2 to ocean water is like almost non existant futhermore not all CO2 produced will dissolvein sea water. Also the acidity of CO2 is not high (very weak acid) and some sea creatures live better in Lower PH water. Also that result is not red more of yellow

  • @j24130

Flawed experiment. There is already is the same amount of CO2 in the glass as it is in atmosphere. When you add the flame that's like 10000x more CO2 in the glass than in our atmosphere + all the other pollutants candle produces

What does a lot more to the ocean is the rest of the pie chart (88%) and how around 1/4 of that (~20% of ALL carbon emissions) is due to production of energy involving fossil fuels like coal and natural gas. Overall, the impact of our personal transport isn't too much compared to that of industrial processes and power generation. If you want to fix climate change, the act to follow isn't a personal one like just getting rid of your car, it's to fight for the overall change in power sourcing and production to decrease the footprint of power generation, fight for carbon-cheap methods of goods transport like rail shipments (0.4% of all emissions), and THEN think about getting rid of cars.

@@demophys4883 he asked what I thought I’m not claiming to be correct. How ever at the end he said cars produce 19lb per gallon… I don’t think you are comprehending how big the ocean is. In addition we don’t live in a closed system there are biological organisms and that intake the co2 and turn it into 02. So with that train of thought I don’t think your car does much to the acidity of the ocean.

    • @clown134

Well, the ocean isn’t a closed system. There are diatoms, algae, and other organisms that play a role in the Carbon cycle. Did you know that during the day the water can become more basic on the pH scale because the photosynthesis by organisms remove carbon dioxide/carbonic acid from the air/water and produce oxygen, then during the night the opposite happens, they consume some oxygen as they wait for the sun to rise causing a drop in pH.
